History

  • Failed to defend itself against the Kingdom of Silla, the Baekje Kingdom collapsed (660 AD) and Daejeon was incorporated into the United Silla Kingdom.
  • In the 500-year reign of the Joseon Kingdom, Daejeon’s reputation grew in another way. It became a ‘Mecca’of the most powerful school of Korean Confucianism called Gihoism.
  • In 1931, the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Office was relocated to Daejeon, which provided additional momentum for its development.
  • January 1989: As the nearby town of Daedeok became part of the city, Daejeon was designated as Jikhalsi (a city directly controlled by the government)
  • January 1995: Renamed as a metropolitan city.

Topographic Features

  • Daejeon is called ‘Jungdo’, meaning that it is located in the central area of Korea, 167.3㎞ away from the capital city of Seoul, 294㎞ from Busan, and 169㎞ from Gwangju. Moreover, Daejeon is a transportation hub with Gyeonbu and Honam Expressways and roads diverged in all directions.
  • Excellent Science and Technology Infrastructure and Research Manpower: Daedeok Innopolis (Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone) is composed of 28 state-run research centers as well as 79 private research institutes with as many as 20,000 researchers. They have been developing world-class technologies that led the nations' economic growth for the past 30 years. Daejeon has 18 universities including KAIST, Korea's top-notch Science Educational Institution, ICU (Information and Communications University) etc.
