History

  • 1896 : With the reorganization of the 13-province system, the name Gyeonggi-do Province is revived. (three bu and 34 counties)
  • 1967 : The provincial office is relocated from Seoul to Suwon
  • 1980 : Administrative districts are changed to 18 cities, 18 counties, 30 towns, and 155 townships.
  • 1990 : Administrative districts are changed to 23 cities and eight counties.
  • 2001 : Hwaseong County and Gwangju County are elevated to Hwaseong City and Gwangju City, respectively. (25 cities and six counties)
  • 2003 : Yangju County and Pocheon County were promoted to Yangju City and Pocheon City respectively in 2003 (27 cities, 4 counties)
  • 2013 : Yeoju County was promoted to Yeoju City in 2013 (28 cities, 3 counties)
  • 2022 : Official operations began at the new Gwanggyo Provincial Office in 2022 (30 Docheong-ro, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si)

Regional Characteristics

Located in the west-central area of the Korean Peninsula, Gyeonggi-do Province borders the west coast and surrounds the capital city of Seoul, which is the heart of the peninsula.
