The 14th Sub-Committee meeting on Disaster Prevention was held from 7th to 10th of March in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. A total of 32 people from 17 regional governments and organizations in 3 countries attended the meeting. Sub-Committee meetings on Disaster Prevention were annually held by NEAR since 2002, and the meeting has been aiming to build the participating organizations’ capacity in preventing disasters and reducing the harm in Northeast Asia. Hyogo Prefecture, the host of the event, has been conducting various measures for disaster prevention and maintaining facilities, based on the lessons it learned from Great Hanshin earthquake (or Kobe earthquake) in 1995. The meeting was followed by special lectures and discussions from the relative international organizations as well as the participants’ visit to the disaster-preventing facilities in Hyogo Prefecture. The NEAR Secretariat sent the group of staff led by Under-Secretary-General Lee Sang-gi, supported the administration of the hosting Hyogo Prefecture, and encouraged other participants from various countries to learn disaster prevention.
