On October 8, the Korean name for NEAR will be officially revised to “동북아시아지방정부연합” as an association that involves 82 local metropolitan governments from six countries in Northeast Asia.

The organization’s previous Korean name (동북아시아지역자치단체연합) had been in  use since its establishment in 1996. However, as the name was considered too lengthy and unclear to effectively convey the nature of the organization, the NEAR Secretariat has recently completed the revision process—with the approval from its member regions—and adopted a new Korean name: “동북아시아지방정부연합.”

The new signboard revealing ceremony is scheduled to take place at the upcoming NEAR Day event. The event will be held at Lahan Hotel in Pohang City with 70 distinguished guests, including Yang Geum-hee, vice-governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Jang Sanggil, vice-mayor of Pohang City, Choi Dosoung, president of Handong Global University, Lee Gyeong-su, vice-president of Yeungnam University, and government officials from Korean NEAR member regions.
