History

  • Originally, the Land of the Peninsula were inhabited by indigenous people of the Russian Far East (Koryaki, Chukchi, and Itelmeni).
  • 1956: Kamchatka Region separated from Khabarovsk Territory.
  • 2008: Changed to Kamchatka Territory.

Topographic Feature and Characteristics

  • There are more than 160 volcanoes in the region, including 28 active ones, a large number of mineral and hot springs, mud volcanoes, and boiling lakes. Kamchatka is also rich in rivers and brooks - more than 14 thousand. Great number of them has length of 10 km, only 105 rivers - more than 100 km. The Penzhina, Avacha, and Bolshaya are the major rivers in the region.

Geography/Climate
  • Area : 464,275㎢
  • Location : Kamchatka includes the entire Kamchatka Peninsula, the adjoining mainland and the Komandorsky Islands. It borders the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
  • Climate : Pacific Ocean and relief are the reasons of diverse and changeable weather of the region. The coasts of Kamchatka Krai have the features of sea climate. In the central and northern districts, the climate is continental. The highest temperatures, up to +37℃, are observed in August in central parts of the peninsula. The average amount of precipitation is 50 to 100cm.

  • Industrial structure: The Major industry is fisheries. Fishery accounts 60% of the industrial production while power generation stands at 22.7%, nonferrous metal 8.0%, machinery and metal processing 5.0% and food manufacturing 4.9%.
