The 8th National Parliament separated Bayanulgii from Khovd Province and established an independent Bayan-Ulgii Province in July 1940

From the early 1960s to the 1970s, the Mongolian, Czechoslovakian and Russian researchers conducted investigation into the areas near Erdenet Mountain several times and found copper and molybdenum reserves for industrial use.
With rapid development and population growth in the area since 1973, Erdenet City was established in 1976 and started to grow as one of the biggest cities in Mongolia. In 1994, Orkhon Province was established in the area of Erdenet, taking major cities including Erdenet, 2 Sums (Bayan-Ondor and Jargalant), and 19 Uuls.

Geography/Climate	Area : 84,400㎢ Location : Orkhon Province is 371km away from Ulaanbaatar City northward, 180km away from Darhan westward, and 60km away from major cities of Bulgan Province east northward. Climate : Warm and clear in the winter, cool with little moisture in the summer and warm and windy in the spring and autumn. Average temperature is -16.5 in January and +18.5 in July.
