History
- The territory of Magadan Region was inhabited by Yakuts in the 18th Century, before the first Russian Cossacks came to the Kolyma area.
 - 1920: The history of Magadan area actually started in 1920s when geological survey expeditions arrived there.
 - 1953: Magadan Oblast was officially formed in 1953 on the region previously known as Kolyma.
 
Topographic Feature and Characteristics
- Magadan Region has rich reserves of gold, silver, tin, tungsten, mercury, copper, antimony, coal, oil, and peat. The other main contributor to the economy is fishing.
 - Local population is leaving in great numbers (60% of leaving people are working age population).
