Pohang City has been officially confirmed as the host city for the 2027 ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) World Congress.
This milestone follows city’s systematic hosting strategy and active international engagement, notably Mayor Lee Kang-deok’s participation in COP29 (the 29th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024. During the event, Mayor Lee presented Pohang’s green transition as an industrial city, earning significant trust and support from ICLEI member governments.
The ICLEI World Congress, organized every three years since ICLEI's establishment in 1990, is the world’s largest gathering of local and regional governments addressing issues such as sustainable urban development, climate change response, ecosystem conservation, and carbon neutrality. In the Republic of Korea, 56 local governments are ICLEI members, and Seoul previously hosted the World Congress in 2015.
