On Friday, October 17, Pohang City became the first local government in Korea to participate the Arctic Circle Assembly, the world’s largest international forum on Arctic affairs. During the assembly, the city, officially proposed hosting a “Regional Forum of the Arctic Circle” in Pohang during a meeting with Chairman Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.
Chairman Grímsson stated, “We will actively support Pohang City’s participation in various programs of the Arctic Circle Assembly and its contributions through lectures and other activities,” adding that “if Pohang submits a hosting proposal, the Assembly will actively review and support it so that the city can play an important role in the Arctic era.”
Launched in 2013, the Arctic Circle Assembly is held annually in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the world’s largest Arctic-focused international forum, bringing together governments, businesses, and research institutions to discuss a wide range of issues, including climate change, science and technology, and sustainable development.
