2018 NEAR Working-level Workshop, held in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, South Korea2018-06-27

The 2018 NEAR Working-level Workshop was held from June 21 to 23 at the Hyundai Hotel Gyeongju. It was attended by 97 working-level staff of 40 regional governments from five NEAR member countries.


The workshop started with opening remarks by Secretary-General Hong Jong-kyoung on the morning of Friday, June 22 and was followed by a report on Secretariat activities. A special lecture was given by Director Da Zhigang of Heilongjiang Institute for Northeast Asia Research on the topic of “The Change in Political Situation and New Opportunities for Cooperation in Northeast Asia.” After the lecture, a group photo was taken, and the representatives of member regional governments of China, Japan and Korea presented overviews of subcommittee meetings and other major events. In the afternoon, after the presentations from Mongolian and Russian member regional governments, workshop participants discussed NEAR current affairs, including the issuing of certificates of membership, membership fee usage, and the revision of NEAR Charter and subcommittees.


After the meeting, an official dinner hosted by the NEAR Secretary-General was held and the participants visited the Gyeongju EXPO Park Theatre and watched Emile, a love story between a king and a lady named Emile. On Saturday, June 23 the participants visited tourist’s spots in Gyeongju including Daereungwon, Jusangjeolli (columnar joint), and Bulguksa Temple.
