On February 18, Secretary-General Lim Byung-jin met with Chen Jianjun, Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Jeju, during his visit to the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Jeju.

Secretary-General Lim expressed gratitude to Chen Jianjun for accepting the invitation to deliver a congratulatory remark at the NEAR Member Workshop, which will be held in Jeju this March. He then shared the recent developments of NEAR and the major events planned for this year. Additionally, Lim highly praised and expressed appreciation for the active participation of the Chinese member governments in the NEAR platform, which has significantly contributed to the association's growth.

In response, Consul General Chen Jianjun stated that the Chinese Consulate General in Jeju has been actively promoting exchanges between Chinese local governments and Jeju Province in various fields, including mutual investment and cultural exchanges. He highly appreciated NEAR's role as a key platform for multilateral exchanges among Northeast Asian local governments and expressed his intention to take a greater interest in NEAR and actively seek ways of mutual cooperation.

Lim and Chen shared the view that with the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting set to be held in Gyeongju this year and in China next year, the success of both events would help ease tension in Northeast Asia and serve as an opportunity to further promote cooperation not only between Korea and China but also among local governments in both countries and across Northeast Asia.

The meeting was also attended by Consul Sun Shaohua of the Chinese Consulate General in Jeju and Director Choi Ju-hwa of the International Cooperation Department of the NEAR Secretariat.
