NEAR Secretary General Ok-chae Kim attended the opening ceremony for the Institute for Global Education (IGE) which was held at Handong Global University on Monday, May 27. There, he exchanged greetings with notable participants such as the eighth Secretary General of the United Nations, Ki-moon Ban and President of Handong Global University, Soon-Heung Chang.

The IGE is the first educational institute established for the purpose of providing global citizens an educational program as part of a basic solution to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN effectively.

A large diplomatic delegation and distinguished guests such as the former President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, Chief Vice-Chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Juan Antonio Samaranch, and Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Cheol-woo Lee participated in the opening ceremony.

Governor Lee gave a congratulatory address at the opening ceremony where he pledged his support to solving the global poverty problem based on the spirit of globalization of the Saemaeul Movement pursued actively by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. Furthermore, Governor Lee added that he would make an effort to open an era of peace and prosperity through mutual cooperation with the Association of the North East Asia Regional Governments (NEAR).

Handong Global University and the Secretariat of NEAR signed MOU for the globalization of local youth in April last year. Since then, they have established cooperative relationships such as the co-hosting of the Northeast Asia Young Leaders Forum in August last year.
