NEAR Secretary-General Visits Akita Prefecture, Japan2018-05-14

NEAR Secretary-General Hong Jong-kyoung visited Akita Prefecture from May 9 to 11, 2018 and held a meeting with Governor Satake Norihisa to welcome Akita Prefecture as the newest NEAR member. Secretary-General Hong introduced the major meetings of NEAR, including the General Assembly to be held in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, China this September and asked for the active participation of Akita Prefecture.



In particular, Secretary-General Hong promoted the first subcommittee meeting on Logistics and Transportation to be held in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China, in December of this year, and also requested Akita Prefecture's active participation as the home of Akita Port. Governor Satake Norihisa presented the current state of external exchange and cooperation of Akita Prefecture and stated that the prefecture wish to further strengthen its relations with other regional governments in Northeast Asia through NEAR.



On Wednesday, May 9, prior to the meeting with the Governor of Akita Prefecture, Secretary-General Hong held a dinner meeting with members of the Akita Prefectural International Exchange Committee, and discussed ways to promote exchange and cooperation between Akita Prefecture and NEAR member regional government. This meeting was attended by the Vice Speaker Takeshita Hirohide and the Representative Miura Eichi from the Akita Prefectural Assembly.



The delegation held a meeting with the Consul General Park Yongmin of the Republic of Korea in Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture to ask to build cooperative relationships among the six northeastern prefectures in Japan and NEAR member regional governments. Furthermore, on the morning of Thursday May 10, the NEAR delegation visited Akita Port and listen to briefings on the status and facilities of the port.
