Genta Suzuki (age 49) assumed office as the new Governor of Akita Prefecture, Japan, on April 21.

Governor Suzuki has served as a member of the Akita Prefectural Assembly since 2015 and was elected governor on April 6.

Governor Suzuki has identified countermeasures against population decline as his top policy priority. Upon his election, he expressed his commitment by stating, “I hope to build a new era and a new Akita together with all of you.”

LIM Byeong-jin, Secretary-General of the Association of North East Asia Regional Governments (NEAR), sent a letter of congratulations to Governor Suzuki, congratulating him on his election and inauguration, and encouraging Akita Prefecture to actively participate in NEAR’s efforts to promote intergovernmental exchange and cooperation in Northeast Asia.

Akita Prefecture joined NEAR in 2018 at the 12th General Assembly and has since been participating in the organization’s activities.
