Secretary General Kim Ok-chae held interviews with Japanese press including NHK TV covering the meeting with Governor of Shimane Prefecture, Maruyama Tatsuya on Friday, August 2, and gave a detailed explanation of the background of NEAR. During the interview, he emphasized it was precisely at such times of heightened diplomatic conflict between Korean and Japan that more exchange between the regional governments and citizens would be needed.

In response to this, NHK TV introduced the roles of NEAR, allotting news time at noon and in the evening on August 2, quoting Secretary General Kim’s statement on the subject of the “Notification of the Importance of Continual Nongovernmental Exchanges between Korea and Japan”.

In addition, the major newspapers such as Yomiuri, Mainichi and Asahi Shimbun reported the contents of the interview with Governor Maruyama entitled “Exchange regardless of Tensions between Korea and Japan.” They also made an introduction regarding the present condition of member regional governments and the history of NEAR in detail, displaying much interest.
