Secretary General Jun Jae-won stated the importance of attracting Chinese visitors as a way of invigorating tourism in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. He also anticipated that it would not be long until the number of Chinese tourists would rise from 200 to 400 million. Secretary General Jun expected that the number of Chinese visitors to Korea would rise to 10 million by 2018 and that meeting the challenge of attracting this would be crucial to the strengthening and development of local tourism. He focused on independent travelers rather than tourists on package tours as current trends indicate that independent travel is more popular. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of developing high quality souvenirs for individual tourists with high incomes than souvenirs for those travelling in groups who prefer cheaper souvenirs and momentos. Secretary General Jun emphasized the importance of developing a fitting advertisement strategy to fit the tastes and preferences of a specific group of visitors. He mentioned that China’s vast size encompasses many regions, each with their unique culture and customs, and so depending on where the customer is from, their preferences differ accordingly. He stated that for the coastal region of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, it would be desirable to target visitors from the inland regions of western China in developing a tourist base and souvenirs as coastal tourism is popular with visitors from inland regions.
